As of from 1st January 2015 all shipping lines will be affected by the introduction of Low Sulphur Fuel Regulations on Trades ex North Europe/Scandinavia and Baltic Region. The aim of the Regulations is to reduce the Sulphur Content in Fuel from 1.00% to 0.10%. This surcharge is to cover the additional cost of producing the Low Sulphur Content Fuel / Oil.
It seems that some Shipping Lines are going to incorporate this increase within their normal container BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor) calculations whereas others are going to show it as a separate cost. So far lines that have announced specific Low Sulphur Surcharges that will come in to affect are:
HAPAG LLOYD US$ 11.00 per 20ft / US$ 22.00 per 40ft
MAERSK US$ 15.00 per 20ft / US$ 30.00 per 40ft
