What are Logistics?

Logistics: A Definition


Logistics is the detailed planning and organization of a complex operation.

Logistics is perhaps best described as the process of getting product from A to B, utilizing the most efficient blend of rate, mode and service, within the constraints of time and cost.

Historically, a manufacturer would manufacture and sell to wholesalers, who in turn sold to retailers.

Warehouses of stock sat ready to move along the distribution chain as required, and each party involved took a margin.

 
 
 


 
 

The Times

Times have changed and it is now more common for Just in Time philosophies to rule and in a competitive market everyone's margins get squeezed and the true cost of holding excessive stock is prohibitive.

The logistics process includes:

Evaluating what to manufacture and the most efficient time to do so.

Ensuring all product and components required for the manufacturing process are on hand as required
